The MAGIC 30’s hull form is a shape that evolved and was perfected at the end of the sailing era by Burgess and Herreshoff for their fastest sea-going sailing vessels: the fshing schooners and pilot boats. It is the lightest shape consistent with enough deadrise to avoid pounding in a seaway. It is about a third lighter than the hull developed under the CCA rule which produced our best cruisers from 1920 to 1960. It is correspondingly faster yet has similar if not better seagoing abilities.

Shoal Draft

Anyone who has cruised in the Bahamas or Chesapeake Bay knows that draft is the most important dimension of a cruising boat. Shoal draft and an ability to take the ground vastly increases teh range and performance of a cruising boat. In an area of high tidal range it can mean teh difference between safety and shipwreck.

Fewer people are aware of the superiority of shoal draft in storm conditions. A shoal boat, without deep keel to trip her up, is less likely to be capsized by a breaking waveas has been well documented by Ralph Monroe with his PRESTO.

Magic 30 draws just  40 inches, depth tha allows ger vestigial keel to carry outside ballast and for her centerboard to be housed entirely under the cabin sole.
